School projects, programs and events funded by the
Foundation:
Cooke Elementary School:
Continuing with their drive for new reading materials, Readermania Books for fourth and fifth graders were purchased.
Gale Elementary School:
2009 Prairie State Award for Excellence winner, author Jim Aylesworth presented three workshops on writing to K-5 students. In addition, his presentation also had many valuable lessons on the importance of courage, dedication and perseverance.
King Elementary School:
Kindergarten – Purchased several CD players, rechargeable batteries and battery chargers to be used for independent listening activities.
First Grade – Purchased several CD players to compliment their guided leveled reading program.
Second Grade – Used funds to purchase a School Smart CD Player along with some Mindware Brainy Manipulatives for the classrooms.
Third Grade – Purchased a new set of novels.
Fourth Grade – Purchased a new set of novels.
Fifth Grade – Purchased 10 new calculators for student use in the classrooms.
Reading Recovery & Special Education – Easy Writing Lessons, Just Right Writing Mini Lessons and Forty Elaboration Activities to help with a new expository writing lesson plan. Also new Math Manipulatives with different methodologies to aid special need students.
Nielson Elementary School:
Renewal of program entitled "Reading A-Z". This website offers short reading books for teachers to use in a guided reading format in small groups. Books can be printed and sent home with the students for additional practice at home. They can also be customized to include the child's name as a character in the story.
Silas Willard Elementary School:
Purchased sets of Rigby PM Kindergarten Evaluation Benchmark Kits containing 60 leveled books along with everything needed to assess the students through the year. Also sets of DRA 2 (Developmental Reading Assessment) Testing materials for Grade 1. In addition Accelerated Reader books for grades 3 and 4.
Steele Elementary School:
Funds were used to purchase "Study Island" for use in grades 2 - 5. It is a web based program and is used as a tool in ISAT preparation and as an additional intervention in the Response to Intervention process.
Churchill Junior High School:
Carl Cannon Assembly – Through role playing, audience response and straight talk with first hand accounts from individuals who have suffered through the consequences of poor judgment, Cannon’s message is about making positive, healthy choices.
Fearless Assembly – An assembly with a large screen video event put on by Motivational Productions. The presentation featured how kids can learn to deal with fear, both healthy and unhealthy, and how to cope with those feelings that can stifle success.
Colonel Roy Webb – Veteran's Day assembly. Colonel Webb is the Superintendent of Schools at Chadwick, Illinois and had just returned from an 8 month tour in Iraq. He spoke to the the students about patriotism.
Lombard Middle School:
To assist students in the classroom and for ISAT testing, six sets of ten calculators were purchased for students who are unable to pay for their own.
Galesburg High School:
English Department – Rolling over this years funds towards a bigger technology purchase next year.
Science Department – computer lab probes for Physics; LCD projectors and smart boards.
Social Studies Department - DVD/VHS recorders to help transfer VHS material onto DVD.
Vocational Agriculture – purchasing a tank heater.
Industrial Tech – purchasing Autoranging Multimeter for use in Electricity class
Health & P.E. Departments – purchase a combination VCR/DVD player.
Foreign Language Department – an LCD projector to be used for short video clips, news programs, as well as Spanish, French and German websites could be projected onto a large screen that can be easily viewed by entire class. Also it will allow class to work on interactive grammar sites during group instruction.
Family & Consumer Science Department – purchase an engraving tool; rotary blade sharpener; International Foods Videos and a USB reader.
Math Department – to allow for more students to have hands on activities, purchases of Geometry Mirrors - dry erase boards, markers, and erasers - Ladders to Success on PSAE Algebra - Ladders to Success on PSAE Geometry - TI-30 calculators.
Business Department – towards purchase of a wireless slate to be used with smartboards.
Driver's Education – roll over their funds for a more expensive purchase in the future.
Art Department – rolling over the funds until next year to spend on a larger project.
Special Education Department – rolling over the funds until next year to spend on a larger project.
