SCHOLARSHIPS

All scholarships are for Galesburg High School seniors, unless otherwise specified.

The GPSF does not select scholarship recipients.

Bernice Henry Howard Scholarship - This $200.00 scholarship is for a GHS Senior who attended Costa Catholic School and has an excellent academic background.

Bob Coe Memorial Golf Scholarship – This $500.00 scholarship is for a senior who has participated in the golf program at GHS and has the highest GPA of those golf team members. The student should be planning to attend a four-year university, and the award will be made directly to the school on the student’s behalf after receipt of their fall semester schedule.

Dave’s Auto Body Scholarship - This $1,000.00 scholarship is awarded to a GHS Senior with a 2.5 GPA or higher an overall attendance rate of 90% or higher. Applicants must enroll full-time at Carl Sandburg College. This scholarship is issued in two payments – the first at graduation and the second when the student submits proof that he/she is on track to graduate, which includes proof of academic eligibility for the first year and enrollment for the second year.

The Euler Fund - This scholarship is named after the famous Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler and gives a nod to “Euler’s Number” with its total of $1,002.71. This scholarship is for seniors who intend to pursue a college major including or similar to mathematics, computer science, statistics, engineering, analytics, or physics.
 

Galesburg Sunrise Rotary Scholarship - This $1,000.00 scholarship is for a GHS Senior with a minimum 2.5 GPA, an attendance rate of 90% or higher, and is not an immediate family member of a Sunrise Rotarian.

George & Janet Lundeen Memorial Scholarship - This $1,000.00 scholarship is for a GHS Senior with a 3.0 or higher GPA who participated in one ISHA sanctioned athletic program for at least one year and is planning to major in education or physical education, with a career goal of teaching, coaching, school administration, or a related field. (Increased from $300.00 in 2024)

GHS Class of 1959 Memorial Scholarship - Two $1,000.00 scholarships are awarded to GHS Seniors who have attended GHS for four years, have a 2.5 GPA or higher, plan to attend an institution of higher learning, and demonstrate good character, dependability, and dedication to GHS.

Helen Scharfenberg Peters Scholarship - This $500.00 scholarship is awarded to a GHS Senior female who plans to attend Knox College. The applicant must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and be of good character.

Irma Gale Girls Service League Scholarship - This $50.00 scholarship is for a GHS senior girl who plans to go to school for some type of higher education.

Irma Gale History Scholarship - This $50.00 scholarship is for a GHS junior enrolled in American Studies with a B or above in the class and who plans to go to school for some type of higher education. (Awarded through the History Department)

Jason Gray Memorial Scholarship - This $1,000.00 scholarship is awarded to a senior from GHS who has lettered in a varsity sport, has a 2.5 GPA or higher, and plans to pursue a career in education and coaching. This scholarship is issued in two payments – the first at graduation and the second when the student submits proof of academic eligibility and enrollment for the next semester.

John Aitchison Scholarship – This $100.00 science scholarship is for an outstanding GHS Senior who has completed a minimum of three years of laboratory science (preferably including physics), displays good citizenship, and has expressed an intention to pursue a career involving science. (Awarded through the Science Department)

John Thiel Scholarship – This $500.00 scholarship is awarded to the varsity boys’ basketball player with the highest GPA. . (Awarded through the Athletic Department)

Louis A. Lakis Memorial Scholarship - Two $1,000.00 scholarships are awarded to a GHS male and a GHS female who possess a minimum 3.0 GPA and are in the upper half of the graduating class. This scholarship is issued in two payments – the first at graduation and the second when the student submits proof of academic eligibility and enrollment for the next semester.

Marjorie Preston Sargeant Memorial Scholarship - This $200.00 scholarship is open to GHS seniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA who are planning to major in any facet of education and have been accepted into any university or college in the state of Illinois.

Maury Beck Scholarship - This $250.00 scholarship is for a GHS Senior who intends to major in communications. Applicants must be in the upper 40% of their class and have a financial need.

Max Wine Memorial Scholarship – This $200.00 scholarship is awarded to a senior with 90% attendance, a GPA of 2.5 or higher who plans to attend a higher educational facility. This scholarship can be renewed for three additional years (for a possible total of $800.00). This scholarship is issued annually, with the first payment made at graduation and subsequent payments made when the student submits proof of academic eligibility and enrollment for the next year.

Mike Tadie Scholarship – This $80.00-$100.00 scholarship is given to the track and/or cross country track coach who will then buy a GHS student with financial need either track or cross country shoes which will let the student participate in running. The student does not need to be a senior. (Awarded through the Athletic Department)

Morgan Family Scholarship - This $2,000.00 scholarship recipient must be a GHS Senior who attended Churchill Jr. High and played basketball as well as be a senior letter winner in either boys or girls basketball. Applicants must be continuing to a two-year, four-year, or vocational school. (Amount increased from $1,000.00 in 2017)

Reginald & Dorothy Mustain Memorial Scholarship – This $500.00 scholarship is for a college-bound senior who has participated in wrestling during all of his/her years at GHS and has the highest GPA of those on the wrestling squad (need not be a letter winner).

 

Robert D. Hepburn Performing Arts Scholarship - This $500.00 scholarship is awarded to a GHS senior with good character, dependability, a GPA of 2.5 or higher, financial need, and at least one year of active participation at GHS in theater, band, orchestra, or other artistic endeavor, who plans to attend a higher educational facility. This scholarship can be renewed for up to three additional years (for a possible total of $2,000.00). This scholarship is issued annually, with the first payment made at graduation and subsequent payments made when the student submits proof of academic eligibility and enrollment for the next year. The student must be enrolled in an institution of higher education and pursuing classes in Theater or Music. The winner should be decided by a committee of not less than three people from the appropriate departments. (Note: Although students who major in one of these areas are preferred, those who pursue classes in school activities such as band, choir, or theater, can qualify for the scholarship even if they major in some other subject and are otherwise qualified.)

 

Robert L. Chadwick Scholarship – This $200.00 scholarship is to be used to send a band student to band camp, preferably a jazz student. (Awarded by the Music Department)

Roy F. Damberg Honor Scholarship - This $250.00 scholarship is for a GHS Senior with a minimum GPA of 2.0 and in the upper 50% of the graduating class. The applicant must show good character, dependability, and preferably an intention to pursue a career in vocational education, communication, or graphic arts.

Scholastic Bowl Scholarship - This $100.00 scholarship is for a GHS Senior who is college-bound and who has participated in Scholastic Bowl activities with a large contribution of success.

Spark & Dick Burgland Athletic Achievement Scholarship - This $300.00 scholarship is for a GHS Senior in the top 25% of the graduating class and a three-year any sport participant who is planning to continue education past high school, exhibits enthusiasm, and possess a tenacious work ethic and love of the sport. (Awarded through the Athletic Department)

Stephen Michael Flanagan Scholarship - This $500.00 scholarship will be awarded to a student who will be attending college and plans to pursue a degree in Business, preferably in Accounting.

Student Action for Education Scholarship - This $100.00 scholarship is for a GHS Senior who has chosen to pursue a career in education.

Wanda B. Sargent Memorial Art Scholarship - This $500.00 scholarship is awarded to a GHS Senior who plans to continue his/her education in the art field. Applicants must have a 2.5 or higher GPA and a 90% attendance rate or higher.
